Elite master program Data Science – preliminary information

LMU

Elite Network Bavaria

Data Science Data Science is the art of converting raw data into information that can be used to draw conclusions and make decisions. For this, a Data Scientist needs to have an excellent command of the techniques and methodologies used in informatics and statistics in order to retrieve all the information that is hidden in the data.
Master of
Data Science
LMU is the first university in Germany that offers an elite master program in Data Science in English. The new master program Data Science is an interdisciplinary program and is carried out jointly by the Institute of Statistics and the Institute for Informatics at LMU because Data Science requires skills for statistical data analysis as well as knowledge of computational approaches and data management. The program comprises various practical components, for example projects in collaboration with partners in industry and economy, summer schools, and practical training in teams. The program is part of and is supported by the Elite Network of Bavaria.
Participants & Application The elite program Master of Data Science is directed at students with an excellent Bachelor's degree in informatics or statistics or a related field. Applicants have to prove that they have sufficient expertise in statistics and informatics. Students will be selected based on their grades, their motivation, and their educational background. Profound knowledge of English is a prerequisite for participation in the program. International applications are welcome.
Curriculum Students will acquire statistical and computational methods for collecting, managing, and analysing large, complex, and volatile data sets. This includes techniques integrating the human user into the data science process. Students can individualize their study program by selecting additional courses in statistics and informatics. The program also comprises courses on data ethics, data confidentiality, and data security as well as practical modules in collaboration with industrial partners in which students can tackle real-world problems. A master thesis concludes the program
Why Data Science? A Harvard business review called the job of a Data Scientist the sexiest job of the 21st century. Why? First, Data Science can be applied to diverse fields such as healthcare, astronomy, manufacturing, retail, and geology, among many others. Second, a data scientist does not just see raw data, but is able to tell a story from the data. Third, McKinsey and many others predict a shortage of people with strong analytical skills in the future, i.e. graduates of the master program Data Science will have excellent job opportunities.
Dates & further Information The program will start in October 2016. Spokespersons of the program are Professor Göran Kauermann (Statistics) and Professor Andreas Butz (Informatics). More information about the requirements, the application process, and the application deadline will be available in April on the program's website: http://www.datascience-munich.de.
